For as long as I can remember, I have had red-tailed hawk in my life. I remember the first time I saw one, and my rapture for them has never left. I love all raptors of course, yet its predominately the red-tailed hawk, that’s always had my heart. Never knew why, never cared, it just is what it is. Working farm and ranch one teenage summer in Nebraska, my intoxication for them became complete. So much so, my parents bought me local artwork of the red-tail, and my girlfriend bought me a rare collector’s book about them full of illustrations; a book that the salesman questioned if appropriate for a teenage boy. Sigh, maybe she was right…I lost that book a long time ago, as well as the artwork.

In my mature years, examining soul’s purpose and looking for deeper connection with Self within, and open to all varieties of spiritual awareness, from native American to Eastern cultures. I eventually discovered the various symbolic meanings and spiritual guidance available by nature’s spirit animal and plant totems and essences. Now, I’m the sort of person who pays attention to the frequency of certain animal sightings or other energies at play in my life.

Nearly any wild animal I sight and photograph for me carries a meaning, a message, a lesson, but above all, a trigger for me to pay closer attention -- to my physical and social environment and surroundings; to the present moments of my life; to what thoughts have weighed heavier and lately on my mind. The animal acts like a sign or symbol; a totem in other words, if you care to embrace Native American and other ancient animal lore.

Interpretations in these moments to the casual observer are often vague, like a fortune cookie or horoscope of sorts, and usually results in my musing for a short while about the possibilities of it, connect with how I feel inside about the observation, and then move on. But when the frequency of any one animal becomes predominately evident over all the others over a period of time, I take that as a sign to examine my life a bit closer in regards to the type of lessons available by having this particular animal totem in my life, and how it is showing itself to me.

And with all that, speaking of horoscopes, I discovered a lot more about red-tailed hawk, and why they were so permanently present in my life. Did you know that Native American Zodiac signs roughly follows the astrological zodiac, along with some fiery similarities for me? Born between March 21 – April 19th in the Northern Hemisphere, my sign as Aries is also dignified as the red-tailed hawk, or falcon, depending upon specific native culture, with similar energies between the two that coincide.

Falcon/hawk people, just like Aries people, can really get their feathers fluffed when others can’t appreciate that vision. This is a point where falcon/hawk/Aries must remain sensitive to the differences between other Native American, and Western Zodiac signs and respect those differences, seeing their potential rather than being impatient. Trust in your medicine, and you will spread your wings and fly into the role of an honest visionary and bring other people to higher awareness. That is what red-tailed hawk is about, and it very much coincides with my aspired approach in this life.
