The Music Of Family Tradition

The Music Of Family Tradition

"Family traditions counter alienation and confusion. They help us define who we are; they provide something steady, reliable and safe in a confusing world." ~ Susan Lieberman

While visiting the Hogan of the Yazzie family in Monument Valley, I was treated to a view of Rose and Great Grand Daughters sharing their world of tradition. Pictured here is Skye playing the flute while Rose looks on out of picture sitting next to her loom. According to Rose, translated through Effie, she explained a little about songs and music in their traditions:

“Songs have a purpose in ceremonies and most songs are not just sung for no purpose or they’re not done just to gather horses or pass time. Songs have purposes in life. These songs and their purpose are passed on from grandparents to grandchildren. It is basically for the purpose of being humble.” ~ Rose Yazzie
